British Red Meat and Dairy Exports: Seizing Opportunities in the EU

British producers of red meat and dairy are being urged to capitalize on export opportunities within Europe, as a new report fr om the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) highlights the EU's significance as a major market worth billions to the UK. The report emphasizes the enduring importance of the EU as the UK's primary trading partner and offers guidance on promoting British produce to remain competitive.

According to the report, between 2022 and 2024, an average of 83% of the UK’s red meat and dairy exports by value were destined for EU markets. In 2024 alone, red meat exports to the EU were valued at £1.4 billion, while UK dairy exports to the region amounted to £1.4 billion.

There is a strong demand for UK lamb, particularly in France, wh ere exports increased by 12.8% year-on-year to £330 million. The report identifies opportunities in premium markets, such as high-value beef in France and Italy and halal lamb in France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Additionally, cheese consumption in Europe is forecast to rise by 5.5% by 2033, presenting an opportunity for UK cheeses like cheddar and stilton.

Dr Amandeep Kaur Purewal, a senior economist at AHDB, noted the importance of maintaining a strong trade relationship with the EU. "Long-term relationships and high-quality/premium products are key to future export growth in Europe," she said.

AHDB's head of international marketing, Gareth Renowden, highlighted that although Europe is already the UK's largest market, fresh opportunities exist that can benefit UK exporters.
