Young Farmer Secures Dairy Tenancy Through Television Plea
In 2023, Gethin Hughes, a young dairy farmer from Wales, appeared on S4C’s program Ffermio, discussing the difficulties of purchasing farmland. His interview caught the attention of dairy farm owners in Ffostrasol, near Llandysul, Ceredigion, who were looking to offer a farm business tenancy.
After a formal selection process, Hughes was awarded the tenancy in 2024. Originally from a mixed dairy, beef, and sheep farm near Aberystwyth, Hughes had initially aimed to buy his own farm but found the financial commitment prohibitive. Instead, he turned to tenancy opportunities and shared farming agreements.
To finance his new venture, Hughes sold a field near Llangeitho, securing half the funds needed to purchase his dairy herd. The remainder was financed through bank loans, with additional loans used to acquire machinery and equipment. He now manages 105 hectares, rents another 77 hectares for summer grazing, and milks a herd of 220 cows, with plans to expand to 250-280 cows over the next decade.
Hughes emphasized the importance of older generations offering tenancy opportunities to younger farmers, suggesting that underutilized land could be more effectively used. He advises young farmers to persist despite setbacks, sharing his own experience of receiving multiple rejections before securing his tenancy.
Additionally, Hughes advocates for government support in protecting council farms and creating more tenancy opportunities for new entrants in the farming sector. Looking ahead, he aspires to purchase his own farm before the expiry of his 10-year tenancy, hoping to pass on the opportunity to another young farmer.
