US Dairy Industry Secures Trade Gains in Southeast Asia Amid Policy Reforms

The US dairy industry has made notable strides in expanding its presence in Southeast Asian markets, particularly due to recent trade agreements with Malaysia and Cambodia. The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) highlights these accomplishments as pivotal in redirecting focus from tariff negotiations to enhancing production efficiency.

At the heart of these developments is the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) strategy, which prioritizes not only the reduction of trade barriers but also the advancement of domestic dairy processing infrastructure. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins has emphasized the administration's commitment to supporting dairy farmers through a comprehensive four-point plan. This includes adjustments to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans aimed at boosting dairy consumption, reducing input costs for farmers, and expanding international market access.

Rollins, speaking at the Joint Annual Meeting of the NMPF, United Dairy Board, and United Dairy Industry Association, underscored the importance of this international outreach, celebrating a 'golden age' for US dairy producers. In her address to industry leaders, Rollins reaffirmed the administration's resolve: “We will never stop fighting for those of you in the dairy industry.”

Beyond market expansion, the USDA is addressing critical issues such as labor needs, with efforts to collaborate with the Departments of Labor and Homeland Security. Legislative changes, however, are contingent on congressional action, particularly concerning labor solutions essential for the dairy sector.

The NMPF is also advocating for domestic policy changes, such as the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, to further bolster the industry's competitiveness. These initiatives are seen as crucial for maintaining the momentum in Asian markets and ensuring long-term resilience and growth of the US dairy sector.
