Uruguayan Dairy Producers Experience Reduction in Financial Debt

The financial landscape for Uruguayan dairy producers has improved in early 2026, as indicated by a 13% year-on-year decrease in sectoral credit usage from January to April, according to data from the Central Bank of Uruguay (BCU). During this period, these producers maintained an average of US$ 183.1 million in total credits with the financial system.

Notably, overdue credits saw a significant reduction, dropping by 41% compared to the same timeframe in the previous year. The average amount of overdue credits decreased from US$ 6.52 million to US$ 3.88 million, highlighting improved financial compliance within the sector.

However, data from April indicated a slight reversal of this trend. The total volume of credits increased to US$ 186.6 million, representing a monthly rise of 2%. Overdue credits also saw an increase from US$ 3.48 million in March to US$ 4.09 million in April, marking a monthly uptick of 17%.

Despite this temporary rise in April, the cumulative indicators continue to show a more favorable financial situation than observed a year earlier. The evolution of indebtedness is a closely monitored indicator within the Uruguayan dairy chain, as it reflects producers' capacity to handle investments, sustain activities, and adapt to changes in costs and markets.

The data from the first four months of 2026 suggest that, at least in terms of bank financing, dairy establishments started the year with a lower credit burden than during the same period in 2025.
