UK Farming Unions Urge Milk Processors for Transparency Amid Market Challenges
Following a meeting of the four UK farming unions, a joint open letter has been sent to milk processors. This letter calls for responsible behavior, transparency, and effective communication during a particularly challenging period for the dairy sector.
The chairs of the dairy boards of each union highlighted concerns regarding the adherence to fair dealing legislation, urging milk buyers to maintain transparency with their suppliers. The letter also encourages dairy farmers to actively engage with milk buyers to ensure that production aligns with market needs.
Jonathan Wilkinson, the NFU Cymru Dairy Board chair, emphasized the importance of a fair and transparent supply chain, especially as many dairy farmers anticipate a difficult winter. He noted that discussions in Wales were crucial to representing collective concerns of farmers across the UK.
Paul Tompkins, chair of the NFU Dairy Board, described the current situation as the first significant test of new contract regulations, with an adjudicator now overseeing compliance. Farmers are now empowered to request explanations for milk price calculations, ensuring they align with contractual agreements.
Cyril Orr, the Ulster Farmers’ Union Dairy chair, stressed the necessity of trust between farmers and processors amid market uncertainty and pressure on farm gate prices. He called for greater openness and collaboration within milk pools to secure a sustainable future for dairy farmers.
Bruce Mackie, chair of the NFU Scotland Milk Committee, noted the alarming decline in milk prices for Scottish dairy farmers, while production costs continue to rise. He underscored the need for transparency and communication to ensure resilience during the industry's difficult months ahead.
