UK Dairy Exporters Gain Relief as Egypt Drops Halal Certification Requirement

In a significant development for UK dairy exporters, Egypt has retracted its plans to mandate halal certification on all dairy products imported from the UK. Initially proposed to commence in January, this requirement was projected to increase costs by approximately £1,000 per shipment due to additional procedures. The decision to abandon the requirement came after discussions between the UK Government and Egyptian officials amidst growing uncertainties in global trade agreements. In 2024, UK dairy exports to Egypt were valued at £26 million, with cheese, butter, and milk products being in high demand. The Department for Business and Trade indicated that this reversal could protect about £250 million in potential exports for UK farmers over the next five years. Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs Daniel Zeichner acknowledged the UK's prowess in dairy farming, emphasizing its global reputation for quality and sustainability. The move is also expected to reduce red tape and boost export growth, aligning with the UK's broader trade strategy to facilitate international commerce, even as new tariff challenges emerge from the US under Donald Trump's administration.
