UK Dairy and Beef Farms May Face New Environmental Permit Costs

The UK government's proposal to extend Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR) to dairy and beef farms is under examination by the National Farmers' Union (NFU). Currently, EPR applies to pig and poultry units to manage emissions and environmental risks. The proposed expansion aims to improve air and water quality and ensure compliance with Environment Agency inspections.

The NFU has raised concerns about the financial impact on farmers, indicating that initial environmental permit costs could reach up to £8,000, with subsequent annual charges around £2,000. The union fears these costs could undermine farm confidence, limit investment, and add inflationary pressure to the food supply chain.

Paul Tompkins, NFU Deputy President, emphasized that British beef and dairy farmers already maintain high environmental and welfare standards. He stated, "British farmers produce beef and dairy to some of the highest standards in the world, while caring for the countryside."

The NFU is advocating for a more adaptable, farmer-led approach instead of a uniform permitting system. With a government consultation expected in the summer, the NFU plans to use feedback from its industry survey to inform its response. The survey, which closes on May 11, seeks to gather farmer experiences and insights.

As farms confront tighter margins and rising input costs, the NFU is keen to ensure that any regulatory changes are practical and beneficial for both the farming community and the environment.
