Trump Imposes New Tariffs on Kazakhstan, Japan, South Korea and Others

Donald Trump has announced a new wave of import tariffs, targeting allies and trade partners alike. In a message posted on Truth Social on Monday, the former president declared a 25% tariff on goods imported from Kazakhstan, Japan, and South Korea alongside additional levies on imports from 12 other countries. The tariffs are set to take effect on August 1st.
“If, for any reason, you choose to raise your tariffs, whatever amount you raise them to will be added to the 25% we impose,” Mr. Trump wrote in letters shared publicly on his social media platform—signaling a potentially more combative trade posture should he return to the White House.
The move, which echoes his first-term trade strategy, may reignite tensions with key U.S. allies and disrupt global supply chains at a time of already fragile economic recovery. Whether this is a negotiating tactic or a shift toward a more protectionist future remains to be seen.
