Tripura's New Liquid Nitrogen Plant Boosts Livestock Breeding
The government of Tripura has inaugurated a new liquid nitrogen production plant at RK Nagar, Agartala, marking a significant step in enhancing the state's livestock breeding infrastructure. The facility, under the Animal Resource Development Department (ARDD), was officially opened by Animal Resource Development Minister Sudhangshu Das.
This plant is part of a broader strategy to modernize livestock development and support artificial insemination programs across the region. Liquid nitrogen is crucial for preserving genetic material and bull semen doses, which are essential for the Tripura Livestock Development Agency (TLDA). Previously, the state's reliance on external suppliers for liquid nitrogen posed supply risks.
With the addition of the RK Nagar plant, Tripura now operates three liquid nitrogen production facilities, including those in Udaipur and Kumarghat. Together, these plants are expected to produce approximately 45,000 liters of liquid nitrogen annually, with each contributing 15,000 liters. This development provides a more reliable and localized supply chain for the state's livestock sector.
Despite this increase in production capacity, the state's demand for liquid nitrogen ranges between 50,000 and 100,000 liters annually. In response, Minister Das announced plans to expand the state's production capacity to nearly 140,000 liters, aiming to meet internal demand fully and generate a surplus for regional distribution.
This initiative is expected to bring economic benefits to smallholders and rural families by improving livestock genetics and increasing farmgate returns from milk and meat. Minister Das praised the project as a historic success and commended the efforts of engineers, technical staff, and TLDA management in its execution.
