Once-a-day (OAD) feeding can be a significant timesaver for farmers, especially when calves are over four weeks old. The gradual weaning of calves, essential for their digestive health, can be assisted by adopting an OAD feeding regime. This approach not only eases the weaning process but also reduces the workload during the busy spring season.
Transitioning Calves to Once-a-Day Feeding

Research suggests an OAD system, started about a month before weaning and at least 28 days after birth, allows calves to adjust and develop their rumen adequately. This change in feeding does not equate to under-feeding; rather, calves receive their daily milk allocation in one go, alongside added concentrate feeds. A consistent reduction in milk over two weeks is crucial to prevent stress. Studies indicate there is no difference in weight gain or health issues when OAD is implemented correctly.

The implementation of OAD can diminish labor by 25-36% compared to twice-a-day regimes, making it an appealing option for many. However, it is crucial to continue monitoring calves twice daily to ensure their health and nutrition are maintained.

Adopting OAD feeding requires careful planning, as calves should have continuous access to concentrates, straw, and fresh water, ideally fed in the morning to ensure calmness in feeding areas. Moreover, it's recommended to space out other stress-inducing activities, such as disbudding, to ensure calves transition smoothly.
