The vaccination campaign will start on Monday, rather than Wednesday as previously planned, and will continue until the end of the year. The volume of vaccines to be provided free of charge to farmers has been increased from 4.6 million to 6.4 million doses, including 1.1 million for sheep and 5.3 million for cattle, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty of France.

Bluetongue has been circulating in the Netherlands, western regions of Germany, and northern Belgium since the end of last year. France had been preparing for this outbreak and established a regulatory zone around the latest outbreak in Belgium. In light of new cases, this zone has been expanded.

Bluetongue is a non-contagious disease of ruminant animals caused by a virus from the genus Orbivirus of the Reoviridae family, affecting both domestic and wild ruminants.

Clinically, the disease manifests in sheep and cattle and is characterized by fever, inflammatory and necrotic lesions in the oral cavity, particularly the tongue, digestive tract, and coronary band epithelium. It also presents with high rates of morbidity, mortality, abortions, and intrauterine fetal death.
