Technological Advancements Boost Milk Production in Campos Novos
Over the last decade, a dairy farm in Campos Novos, a municipality in Brazil, has increased its milk production from 29,000 liters to 300,000 liters annually. This substantial growth is attributed to a series of strategic improvements in farm management and infrastructure.
A key transformation was the adoption of perennial pastures, which eliminated the need for annual replanting and restructured the farm's production base. This change was reported to enhance the profitability of the dairy operation. The new pasture system directly improved herd performance and facilitated a steady increase in milk production across the region of Santa Catarina.
In 2019, another significant development was the construction of a milking parlor closer to the grazing area. This eliminated the need for a two-kilometer commute for the cows, thereby optimizing daily management and reducing logistical efforts. The construction was part of a broader effort to reorganize production space, which also included the implementation of smaller, controlled grazing areas known as paddocks.
Following these changes, the farm was recognized as a Technical Reference Unit by Epagri, attracting visits from other farmers interested in the applied technologies. By 2020, the farm's milk production had reached 165,000 liters, generating a gross revenue of R$ 300,000.
Further enhancements in 2021 included the installation of water supply systems in all paddocks, ensuring continuous access for the animals. The farm also developed a heifer rearing system to improve herd replacement. With personal investments, the family built a barn to provide feed for 56 cows.
In 2022, eucalyptus trees were planted in the pasture area to provide shade and improve animal welfare, a move guided by technical advice. The farm's expansion now includes a generational aspect, with the son of the owners actively involved in farm operations, signaling a commitment to long-term sustainability in dairy farming.
