Strong Support for Extending Free School Milk in the UK

A new national survey indicates that 82% of British respondents are in favor of extending the provision of free school milk for the entire Reception year, rather than ceasing it on a child's fifth birthday. This current policy is criticized for creating an inconsistent cutoff that affects children's access to milk based on their birth month.

Advocates argue that extending the program would support British dairy farmers by increasing the demand for milk supplied to schools. Currently, the cessation of free milk at age five leads to low uptake of paid provision, with only 13.5% of parents opting to continue the service, impacting over 480,000 children.

The initiative to extend free school milk is backed by Cool Milk's campaign, 'Fair milk for a fair start,' which calls for a universal cutoff to ensure all children receive free milk until the end of the Reception year. According to the poll, 86% of participants believe that good nutrition during the first year of primary school is crucial for learning and development.

Nick Harrison, CEO of the Sutton Trust, emphasized that this change could address inequality, stating that the extension would prevent children from being penalized for their birthdays. Wayne Norrie, CEO of Greenwood Academies Trust, described the proposed policy change as sensible, noting milk's role in supporting concentration and well-being.

Campaigners highlight that the proposed change, costing £23.75 per pupil, would alleviate administrative burdens on schools and promote equality in early years nutrition. The findings are expected to put pressure on policymakers to reconsider the current system, aiming for a fairer approach that benefits both children's health and the domestic dairy industry.
