Sri Lanka and New Zealand Eye Expanding Trade in Food, Starting Economic Dialogue

Sri Lanka and New Zealand have initiated talks to broaden their trade relationships, particularly in sectors such as dairy, processed food, and tourism. The recent discussions in Colombo between the countries' foreign ministers have highlighted the mutual interest in expanding trade links and addressing legal migration.

New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters emphasized the growing collaboration and investment from New Zealand companies in Sri Lanka, noting the potential benefits these partnerships could bring to sectors like agriculture and healthcare. "We discussed the growing number of New Zealand companies working with and investing in Sri Lanka or looking to work with Sri Lankan partners," Peters said.

Furthermore, the talks also included discussions on legal migration and the security dynamics of the Indo-Pacific region. The opening of embassies in each other’s countries in recent years underscores the growing diplomatic ties. Sri Lanka recently expressed its interest in joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement to enhance its market access capabilities.

On the educational front, the conversations identified a keen interest in boosting academic partnerships, particularly given the presence of over 1,200 Sri Lankan students in New Zealand. This is complemented by plans for strengthened vocational training collaboration aimed at youth skills development in alignment with industry needs.
