South Caernarfon Creameries Completes Expansion with Gemak
South Caernarfon Creameries, the oldest and largest farmer-owned dairy co-operative in Wales, has successfully completed a £15 million expansion project aimed at increasing cheese production capacity from 15,000 tons to 23,000 tons annually. This expansion was made possible with the support of a £5 million grant from the Welsh Government's Food Business Investment Scheme.

The project, known as "Project Dragon", was executed by Gemak, a company specializing in the design and manufacturing of hygienic processing equipment. Gemak's state-of-the-art whey, milk, and cream processing facilities included the installation of a new milk and cream processing plant, storage silos, and a CIP unit for existing operations.

The initiative is noteworthy for its environmental focus, achieving "Net Zero Plus water" status by generating more clean water than it consumes. Notably, the facility can process 600 tonnes per day and uniquely can produce whey concentrate with 30% total solids - a first for the UK. The project has set a benchmark in sustainability and efficiency, with Alan Wyn-Jones, Managing Director of SCC, citing the selection of Gemak for their quality and integration capability.

Kursat Uysal of Gemak expressed pride in the accomplishment and mentioned the collaboration with industry leaders such as Alfa Laval, Schneider Electric, Tetra Pak, Grundfos, and Ematics. The completion of this project underpins SCC’s resilience and competitive edge in the global dairy market, while marking a significant milestone for the UK dairy industry.
