Significant Sales and Records at Recent UK Livestock Auctions
Recent livestock auctions across the UK have witnessed remarkable sales and price records. In a major reduction sale at Worcester, a Dutch Spotted sheep from the Wedderburn flock topped at 9,000gns. This sale also featured other high-value transactions, including a two-crop ewe, Boyo Gloria, which sold for 3,800gns, and a gimmer, Johnstown Isha, taken for 3,600gns.
In the Dairy Shorthorn category, a new record was established at Oxton Farms, Tadcaster. Churchroyd Heather 159, a two-year-old heifer, sold for 5,900gns, eclipsing previous records. The sale was part of the Dairy Shorthorn Society's annual event, drawing a large crowd of breeders and enthusiasts.
At Penrith, a strong trade was observed for the 267 calves on offer, with a Charolais bull fetching a top price of £1,280. Heifers from the same farm reached £1,080, showing robust demand across the board. British Blues also sold well, with a four-month-old bull achieving £1,000.
Kirkby Stephen saw elevated prices for cast cows, with a top price of £2,288.88 for a Limousin cross cow. The highest price per kilo was recorded at 307.5p/kg for another Limousin cross.
The Worcester sale for Dutch Spotted sheep was led by a shearling ram, Lottmead Indiana Jones, selling for 1,600gns. Other notable sales included a pre-sale show champion, Linford Ivy, and a ewe lamb, Aberhonddu Jitterbug, both fetching significant prices.
At the opening store lamb sale in Bentham, prices were strong, with Beltex lambs reaching £161/head and Texels peaking at £156.50/head. In total, 2,676 lambs were averaged at £122.02, indicating a healthy market demand.
