Russian Scientists Develop Virus Strain Against Bovine Diarrhea of the Second Genotype

The VNIIZZh noted that most preventive measures currently rely on first genotype strains. However, in recent years, there has been an increase in outbreaks caused by the second genotype in several countries. In Russia, there are currently no vaccines covering both pathogen variants.
Bovine viral diarrhea is considered one of the most widespread infections among livestock. The disease affects animals of all ages but is particularly dangerous for young animals. It is associated with decreased productivity, costs for treatment and prevention, and high calf mortality, leading to significant economic losses for the industry.
According to experts, the high genetic and antigenic variability of the pathogen complicates the creation of universal drugs. The new second genotype strain will serve as a foundation for the development of comprehensive vaccines and diagnostic tools, which could enhance the effectiveness of combating the disease across the entire industry.
