Rohtak Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Dairy Waste Disposal
Municipal authorities in Rohtak, northern India, have launched a stringent enforcement campaign against urban dairy operators who fail to comply with waste disposal and sanitation regulations. This initiative follows public complaints and social media reports highlighting worsening sanitary conditions in urban milksheds.
The Municipal Corporation of Rohtak carried out a coordinated operation targeting dairies that improperly manage cattle waste. Consequently, operators were fined a total of ₹46,000 for immediate sanitation infractions. Furthermore, 15 dairy units received formal notices warning of potential facility closure and sealing if proper waste management is not maintained.
Local political and community pressures have exacerbated the situation, with lawmakers recently issuing a one-week ultimatum to address sewage overflow and cattle waste issues. This ultimatum has led to the accelerated deployment of inspection teams tasked with enforcing sanitation standards.
During inspections, significant accumulations of dung and improper waste disposal were noted, with operators discharging untreated waste into municipal drains. Authorities emphasized that operators are solely responsible for these violations.
Moving forward, compliance with environmental and hygiene standards is mandatory for all urban dairies. The municipal corporation plans to continue unannounced inspections as part of its cleanliness campaign to preserve the city's drainage infrastructure. The recent enforcement measures highlight the importance of transitioning dairy operations to rural areas for long-term compliance.
