Rising Costs Threaten Dairy Profitability in Santa Fe, Argentina
The profitability of dairy farms in Santa Fe, Argentina, is under significant threat due to escalating costs, stagnant milk prices, and mounting debt levels. This situation is outlined in a recent report by the Confederación de Asociaciones Rurales de Santa Fe (CARSFE) and the local dairy producers' cooperative, Meprolsafe.
The report highlights that the cost of inputs, including feed and energy, has seen a sharp increase, while the price of milk has not kept pace, leading to a financial squeeze on producers. Many farms are struggling to manage their debts, which have been increasing as they attempt to cover operational costs.
CARSFE and Meprolsafe warn that without intervention or support, the financial viability of these farms is at risk, which could lead to closures and a reduction in dairy production capacity in the region.
The report calls for governmental and institutional support to address these challenges, suggesting that measures be taken to adjust milk prices to reflect the increased costs of production. This adjustment is seen as crucial for maintaining the sustainability of dairy operations in the area.
Furthermore, the organizations emphasize the importance of developing long-term strategies to stabilize the dairy market and support producers in overcoming the current economic hurdles.
