Punjab Government Introduces Livestock Card to Boost Dairy and Meat Sectors
The Punjab government has initiated the second phase of the Chief Minister Livestock Card Programme, a strategic effort to bolster the livestock sector and improve rural livelihoods. According to Deputy Director Livestock, Tanveer Ashraf Kalyar, the programme aims to empower both smallholder and commercial farmers through financial inclusion and the promotion of modern livestock practices.
Under this scheme, registered farmers will have access to interest-free loans ranging from Rs 135,000 to Rs 540,000. These loans are designed to enhance liquidity and encourage investment in animal nutrition and healthcare. The Livestock Card will become operational on 15 November 2025, allowing cardholders to purchase essential feed items from authorised dealers.
To qualify for the programme, farmers must own between five and ten calves or bulls and be registered in the Livestock Department's 9211 system. The application process involves sending an SMS with the format PLC [space] CNIC number to 8070.
Deputy Director Kalyar highlighted the critical role of livestock in Punjab's economy, describing it as the backbone of agricultural productivity and food security. He noted that the Livestock Card initiative is crucial for modernising the sector by ensuring consistent access to quality feed and veterinary services.
The programme is also expected to attract youth to livestock farming, promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in rural communities. By boosting productivity at the grassroots level, the initiative supports broader food security and economic resilience goals across Punjab.
