Pune FDA Shuts Down Dairy Plant Following Food Poisoning Outbreak

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Pune has initiated a comprehensive inspection and compliance crackdown on dairy processing facilities following a severe food poisoning incident. This incident, linked to contaminated mawa sweets, resulted in the hospitalization of a 13-year-old child in the Wadgaon Sheri neighborhood. In response, the FDA has temporarily shut down the primary manufacturing plant responsible for the contamination and suspended its processing license pending further investigation.

Regulatory inspectors have collected samples of raw materials and finished products from the implicated facility for microbiological screening and adulteration tests at government laboratories. This emergency mobilization aims to enhance food safety by rigorously examining dairy processing plants and distributors across the district.

Agricultural and veterinary experts underscore the vulnerability of dairy products to pathogen growth, particularly during high-temperature production cycles. Maintaining the integrity of cold chains is crucial to preventing bacterial proliferation. Any disruptions in the cold chain, whether during rural procurement, transit, or retail storage, can significantly increase the risk of contamination.

To address these risks, the Joint Commissioner of Food for FDA Pune, Digambar Bhogawade, announced the formation of task forces to conduct unannounced audits of processing lines. These audits will assess handling protocols and climate-controlled storage for high-risk dairy products such as paneer, curd, cream, butter, lassi, shrikhand, and khoya.

This initiative reflects the challenges faced by dairy supply chains in urban markets, where consumer demand for hygiene and quality assurance is increasing. The Pune FDA's enforcement actions highlight the need for rigorous compliance and investment in cold chain technologies to safeguard public health and maintain brand integrity.
