Proper Milk Storage to Enhance Freshness and Longevity

Storing milk in the refrigerator door, a common practice for many, can lead to it spoiling quicker due to fluctuating temperatures. Arla Foods advises that milk should be stored at the back of the fridge, where it remains more consistently chilled, away from the warmer air that enters when the door is opened. This positioning helps in maintaining the milk's freshness for a longer period.

According to Arla Foods, exposure to air accelerates the spoilage process, making it crucial to keep milk sealed and in a chilled environment. They suggest that for optimal preservation, milk should immediately be placed at the back of the fridge once purchased.

In addition to proper refrigerator storage, Arla Foods provides guidelines for freezing milk. They recommend freezing it as soon as possible after purchase and before its best-before date. Milk should be transferred to a secure, airtight container to avoid expansion-related spills. Upon needing the milk, it should be defrosted in the fridge for at least 24 hours and consumed within a couple of days once thawed. Refreezing is not advised.

Dr. Xand van Tulleken, during an appearance on BBC Morning Live, offered insights into storing milk. He mentioned that while keeping milk in the fridge door is convenient and commonly practiced, especially in households with high milk consumption, it is not ideal for those who do not use milk quickly. He suggests that individuals living alone should consider storing milk on the middle shelf of the fridge to prevent rapid spoilage. Dr. van Tulleken also warned that relying solely on the milk's smell to test its freshness could be misleading, as it might contain harmful bacteria despite smelling acceptable.
