Profeco Identifies Top Whole Milk Brands in Mexico for Quality and Value
The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) in Mexico conducted a comprehensive evaluation of whole milk brands, focusing on quality, price, and labeling accuracy. The study involved around 20 products, including eight brands of whole cow's milk, assessing their nutritional content, sanitary quality, and labeling veracity.
The analysis crowned Lala Orgánica Entera as the best whole milk option, highlighting its nutritional profile. Despite being in the higher price range at approximately 45 Mexican pesos per liter, it met its product claims with a relatively low-fat content. This reflects a consumer trend favoring organic dairy products free from pesticides and artificial additives.
Meanwhile, brands like Vaca Blanca and Liconsa Plus were noted for balancing quality with affordability, pricing around 20 pesos per liter. This is critical for family economies in Mexico and suggests a price-sensitive consumer segment served by companies optimizing production and distribution costs.
The Mexican dairy market is dominated by major players like Lala and Alpura, which enjoy significant consumer preference. The PROFECO analysis also highlighted the price range among popular brands, such as Bové, Alpura Selecta, and Santa Clara, which fall within the mid-to-high price category. Factors like ultra-pasteurization, vitamin addition, and organic status significantly influence the final price to consumers.
Overall, PROFECO's report serves as a vital purchasing guide, promoting transparent competition in the dairy chain. While Lala Orgánica is noted for superior quality, other brands are validated for their quality-price ratio. The challenge for the Mexican dairy agro-industry remains to maintain quality at the source, ensure traceability, and combat labeling misinformation that confuses consumers about the true nature of the products they purchase.
