Preparing for Calving Season: A Focus on Calf Nutrition and Health

As the calving season approaches, farmers are urged to re-evaluate their practices to optimize the health and growth rates of their calves. A key discussion at the recent Aurivo 'Your Farm Your Future' event centered on these issues, with significant input from renowned veterinary consultant Tommy Heffernan.

Speaking under his moniker 'Tommy the Vet,' Heffernan emphasized the need for consistent good habits to achieve the ultimate goal of healthier calves. He highlighted the critical need to boost immunity and reduce infection pressures as spring approaches.

Hygiene

Heffernan pointed out that poor-quality forage fed to spring calving cows and heifers could impact the quality of colostrum. He advised partnering with a nutritionist to properly supplement cows if silage quality falls short. Employing tools like a colostrometer or refractometer to measure colostrum quality can ensure calves receive the best start.

He highlighted the importance of hygiene due to colostrum’s high fat and protein content, making it prone to bacterial growth. Therefore, keeping equipment sterilized is paramount for calf health.

Milk Quantity

When discussing nutritional immunity, Heffernan proposed feeding calves at least 3 liters of milk twice daily. Looking to the future, he predicted an increase in milk feeding as calves require essential nutrients for optimal growth. Adhering to a consistent feeding schedule can significantly enhance development.

Heffernan also emphasized gut health, noting that a substantial portion of the immune system resides there. Good gut health is crucial to preventing diseases such as scour, which increases vulnerability to pneumonia.

Gradual Weaning

Heffernan recommended a gradual weaning process, allowing calves sufficient time on milk and solids. This approach could reduce the incidence of summer scour and promote stronger calves at weaning. He advised against weaning if calves consume less than 2 kilograms of meal daily.

Overall, Heffernan encouraged adherence to the basics while striving for small, incremental improvements over time, leading to substantial results. He emphasized that perfection is unattainable, but progress through simple, consistent changes can significantly benefit calf management.
