Fonterra, a New Zealand dairy cooperative, reported that the first year of operation for its electric milk tanker, called Milk-E, was a success. The electric tanker began collecting milk in May of the previous year for Fonterra's Waitoa milk factory. The project was partly funded through the Government's low-emissions transport fund, reflecting Fonterra's commitment to its electric vehicle strategy.

Paul Phipps, the General Manager for National Transport and Logistics at Fonterra, expressed satisfaction with the trial's progress but acknowledged the challenges they faced. One major challenge was the availability of charging infrastructure. The COVID-19 pandemic caused disruptions in the supply chain, delaying the delivery of the DC fast charger required for rapid charging. Despite these challenges, the new charger, with a capacity of 120 kWh, was eventually installed and reduced charging time to two-and-a-quarter hours.

To minimize downtime from battery charging, Fonterra aimed to implement a battery swap system at the Waitoa site. This custom-designed system required engineering to ensure it met specific requirements. However, the cooperative is pleased to report that the battery swap system is now on track and will be operational during peak periods.

Fonterra's decision to invest in an electric tanker was driven by a desire to gain insights into the future of electric transport in rural settings. Since the end of May, Milk-E has collected over 1.6 million liters of milk and completed 326 on-farm collections. The electric tanker has a range of approximately 140 km on a full charge, with each milk run averaging about 45 km.

Feedback from the 25 different drivers who operated Milk-E has been positive. They appreciate the quietness of the electric vehicle, which contributes to a more comfortable driving experience. Farmers have also provided positive feedback, noting that the absence of engine noise during milk collection on the farm is a welcome change. Fonterra's electric vehicle initiative aligns with its goal to reduce emissions and transition toward more sustainable transportation options.
