NMPF Awards Scholarships to Graduate Researchers in Dairy Innovations

The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) has awarded five scholarships under the 2026 National Dairy Leadership Scholarship Program. These scholarships are granted to exceptional graduate students across the United States who are conducting advanced research in areas critical to the dairy industry, including biosecurity, environmental sustainability, and manufacturing efficiency.

The announcement was made during a leadership meeting in Arlington, Virginia, where the NMPF Board of Directors selected the recipients. The program is designed to support master's and doctoral candidates whose research aligns with the commercial and technical priorities of domestic milk marketing cooperatives and primary dairy producers.

This year's scholarship recipients are involved in cutting-edge research projects. Pari Baker, a doctoral candidate at Case Western Reserve University, is investigating molecular factors affecting mammary cell susceptibility to the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Similarly, Vaishali Poswal from South Dakota State University is exploring antimicrobial solutions for environmental listeria persistence in dairy processing plants.

On the environmental front, Haowen Hu, a doctoral candidate from Cornell University, is advancing whole-farm environmental modeling to improve sustainability in U.S. dairy systems. Gabriela Alejandra Macay Hernandez at the University of Florida is studying the effects of semen components on reproductive responses and offspring performance.

In the area of product development, Jayden Scott, a master's student at Washington State University, is focusing on the interaction between microbiomes and flavor development in white cheddar cheese, aiming to enhance product consistency and premium flavor profiles.

Gregg Doud, NMPF President and CEO, emphasized the importance of investing in scientific talent to maintain the competitive edge of the U.S. dairy sector. The scholarship program is funded through industry donations and annual raffle proceeds, linking academic research with practical farm solutions. As the scholars progress, their findings are expected to contribute significantly to animal welfare, disease control, and processing efficiency across the nation.
