Nigeria Aims to Boost Dairy Sector and Reduce Milk Imports

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to strengthen its dairy sector in an effort to reduce the country's reliance on imported milk and dairy products, which currently costs around $1.5 billion annually. Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, highlighted the importance of collaboration with industry stakeholders during a meeting with the Dairy Sub-Sector Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) in Abuja.

Key areas of focus include improving cattle breeds, expanding milk aggregation and collection centers, and enhancing feed and fodder development. The government is actively seeking investors through public-private partnerships and is offering 417 grazing reserves for potential rehabilitation as part of these efforts.

Ore Famurewa, Chairperson of the MAN Dairy Sub-Sector Group, reaffirmed the group's commitment to supporting the National Dairy Policy and addressing the local milk production deficit. Initiatives by MAN members like FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc involve establishing milk production centers, training farmers, and investing in processing facilities.

The collaboration aims to build a sustainable, competitive dairy industry that supports food security and rural livelihoods. These efforts are expected to fast-track the implementation of the National Dairy Policy and enhance Nigeria's dairy production capabilities.
