The 2020 election saw the Labour Party gaining popularity, especially in rural areas, owing to their effective response to COVID-19. However, the relationship between Labour and the farming community seems strained, with concerns about poor government consultation and the emergence of protest groups like Groundswell. While Labour maintains its commitment to climate goals, its approach to agriculture faces criticism, causing some division in rural New Zealand.

On the other hand, the National Party is taking a cautious and less controversial stance. They've withdrawn support for the He Waka Eke Noa (HWEN) initiative, promising methane reductions through yet-undeveloped technology. Their pledge to make utes more affordable and remove resource consents for water storage infrastructure construction may attract rural voters.

The ACT Party proposes simpler solutions with access to climate-reducing technologies, cheaper utes, and claims to have an outstanding climate change policy.

The Green Party's agriculture policies, including banning synthetic nitrogen fertilizers and limiting stocking rates, seem focused on environmental concerns, potentially alienating some farmers.

NZ First presents a comprehensive set of agriculture policies, some of which make sense, such as farmer representation and specifying wool in government procurement contracts. However, the idea of renaming Landcorp as New Zealand First Farms may face challenges during coalition negotiations.

In summary, the various parties have different approaches to agriculture, climate, and rural concerns, creating a diverse political landscape for New Zealand's farming community.
