Netherlands' Floating Dairy Farm Faces Closure Amid Regulatory Issues

The Floating Farm, launched in Rotterdam in 2019 as the world's first floating dairy farm, is up for sale. This innovative project, developed by Peter and Minke van Wingerden, aimed to produce dairy products like milk, yoghurt, and cheese close to urban consumers without relying on traditional farmland. The farm is a three-storey structure housing 28 cows, featuring automated milking facilities and a processing site.

However, the farm has encountered regulatory and infrastructure challenges. Two years ago, the farm's floor, designed to minimize emissions, began to bulge, creating issues for both the cows and a robotic scraper. A replacement floor from Germany failed to meet Dutch certification standards, leading to potential fines of up to €24,000 if inspected multiple times. Minke van Wingerden expressed doubts about the success of further appeals.

Additionally, the farm's lease at the Rotterdam port is set to expire in early 2028, with no extensions expected. The port authority stated that the farm was always meant to be a temporary initiative, unsuitable for the long-term industrial port environment.

While the Floating Farm is currently up for sale, there is interest from international buyers. The structure's mobility allows for potential relocation within the Netherlands, but it requires significant infrastructure such as electricity and water supply, road access, and milk processing approvals.
