The herd has been quarantined. The National Veterinary Service Laboratories confirmed the strain of the virus resembles one found in California.

With supportive care, dairy cattle typically recover from the bird flu with little to no mortality associated with the disease.

State Veterinarian Roger Dudley said Nebraska dairy producers should follow strict biosecurity protocols and to contact their veterinarian immediately if their animals are exhibiting any symptoms of the virus.

Bird flu symptoms are most commonly found in late-stage lactating cows and can include clear nasal discharge, drop in milk production, tacky or loose feces, lethargy, dehydration, fever and thicker, concentrated milk.
