National Dairy Council's Educational Farm Visits for Children in Ireland

The National Dairy Council (NDC) in Ireland has organized a series of educational visits to dairy farms for schoolchildren. The initiative is aimed at helping children understand the process of dairy production and its importance. During these visits, children get the opportunity to meet farmers and learn about the daily operations on a dairy farm.

One of the farms participating in this initiative is operated by Rickey Barrett in west County Cork. Barrett's farm, which supplies to Clona, is home to 200 cattle, primarily Holsteins, and operates under a high production system. Barrett emphasized the significance of milk as a nutritious product, highlighting its rich content of minerals.

Barrett noted that the agricultural sector plays a crucial role in the Irish economy, providing employment to many directly and indirectly. He also expressed hope that these farm visits would help change negative perceptions about dairy farming.

The visits also aim to reconnect children with agriculture and its processes. Students from various schools across the county, including St. Mark's Boys’ National School and Gaelscoil Mhichíl uí Choileáin, participated in these visits. They were provided with 'Moo Crew' hats and high-visibility gear for safety during their visit.

During the farm tours, children learned about the role of grass in milk production, observed the milking process, and participated in lessons on nutrition. They also had the chance to taste various dairy products and visit young calves, which was particularly popular among the students.

Research commissioned by the NDC revealed that over half of Irish parents with children under 12 reported that their child had never seen a cow being milked. This statistic underscores the importance of initiatives like the NDC's farm visits in familiarizing children with agricultural practices.

The NDC's initiative is part of the broader EU School Milk Scheme in Ireland, which has been in place since 1982. The scheme provides schools with milk at discounted rates and educational support to promote the nutritional benefits of dairy consumption.
