Merseyside Pupils Engage in Hands-On Farming Education Initiative

More than 350 schoolchildren from Merseyside had the opportunity to leave their classrooms and experience farming firsthand through an event organized by the Northern Region of the National Sheep Association (NSA). The 'Farm Gate to Dinner Plate' event took place on a farm near Widnes, hosted by farmer Olly Harrison, known for his OllyBlogs YouTube channel. This initiative aimed to educate children about British food production and countryside stewardship.

The event offered a comprehensive look into various aspects of farming, including demonstrations of sheep shearing and sheepdog handling. Pupils also engaged in activities such as making bread from flour they learned to process from wheat, understanding pig production, and exploring modern farm machinery. Experts from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) were present to discuss the role of red meat and dairy in a balanced diet.

According to NSA Northern Region Manager Chris Adamson, the event was a significant success, highlighting the importance of providing young people with direct experiences in farming. He emphasized the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the children, noting that many have limited direct contact with farms.

In addition to hands-on farming activities, the event included environmental workshops where students planted seeds and learned about conservation efforts by farmers to support wildlife. Egg hatching demonstrations were also part of the day's activities.

Host farmer Olly Harrison expressed his satisfaction with the event, noting the excitement and interest of the children. He stated that such events are crucial in building a connection between young people and the food they consume daily.

This event is part of a broader effort to engage youth with agriculture, similar to an initiative in Suffolk where over 500 students explored agricultural careers at the Food and Farming Student Day. The NSA thanked all contributors, including exhibitors, sponsors, and educators, for making the Merseyside event successful.
