Kwality Wall's Transitions to Milk-Based Ice Cream in India by 2027

Kwality Wall's, a leading brand in the Indian ice cream market, has announced a significant change in its product formulation strategy by committing to a complete transition from palm oil-based frozen desserts to fully milk-based ice creams by 2027. This decision was confirmed by Peter ter Kulve, the Global CEO of the newly independent Magnum Ice Cream Company, following its spin-off from Unilever.

This strategic pivot is set to reshape the market dynamics within India, which is recognized as one of the fastest-growing ice cream markets globally. Under Indian food safety regulations, products using vegetable fats must be labeled as 'frozen desserts', while 'ice cream' status is reserved for those using genuine milk fat. By adopting dairy-based formulations, Kwality Wall's intends to reposition its sub-brands, including Cornetto and Magnum, within the premium segment.

From a business perspective, replacing palm oil with milk fat involves a high-cost strategy that challenges traditional cost-efficiency models. Vegetable oils are typically employed by mass-market producers to ensure lower costs and stable prices. Despite the higher production expenses associated with dairy ingredients, Kwality Wall's is pursuing a volume-driven pricing strategy, planning to reduce retail prices by up to 30% in certain categories to increase market penetration.

The company is also implementing an extensive capital expenditure plan to support this transition, targeting the deployment of up to one million specialized retail cold cabinets across India. This move is expected to significantly impact regional milk procurement networks and boost product localization, with a focus on flavors that resonate with local tastes, such as Kulfi and Kesar Bhog.

This shift by Kwality Wall's is seen by international analysts as a case study in how consumer demand for authenticity and transparency in product labeling can drive global companies to overhaul their supply chains.
