Karnataka Dairy Cooperative Files Complaint Against Flipkart's Milk Pricing Strategy
The Bangalore Cooperative Milk Union Ltd (Bamul), a significant part of Karnataka Cooperative Milk Federation, has raised concerns against Flipkart's pricing strategy. Bamul filed a complaint with the Competition Commission of India, claiming that Flipkart's Rs 1 per litre milk offer threatens the livelihoods of dairy farmers.
Bamul president D K Suresh emphasized that Flipkart's campaign undermines the dairy sector, which supports millions of farmers. He stated that milk is not merely a marketing tool but a vital source of income for many.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Suresh sought intervention, arguing that such marketing practices could lead to nationwide protests. According to Bamul, the campaign has already resulted in a decrease of daily sales by approximately 40,000-50,000 litres.
Bamul pays farmers Rs 38-40 per litre, raising questions about the feasibility of selling milk at Rs 1. The cooperative is also conducting quality checks on milk sold through such promotions to ensure standards are met.
Approximately 14.5 lakh litres of milk have been sold through this campaign, backed by significant advertising investments. Suresh urged the government to take steps to protect the cooperative dairy sector.
