Kaleb Cooper Advocates for Increased Support to British Farmers
Kaleb Cooper, known for his role in the television series Clarkson's Farm, has called attention to the financial struggles faced by British farmers. Speaking during the launch of a television advertisement for Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone, Cooper stressed that farmers would greatly appreciate it if price increases were extended to them. He noted that intermediaries often take a significant share of profits, leaving farmers with minimal returns.
Cooper argued that the general public is largely unaware of the financial plight of farmers, as they tend to overlook the implications of milk prices. He suggested that an additional payment of 10p per litre to farmers could make a substantial difference. Despite inflationary pressures, with food and non-alcoholic drink prices rising by 2.2% in May, milk prices have surged by 7.2% over the past year.
In his remarks, Cooper also underlined the critical role of farming co-operatives in ensuring the sustainability of British agriculture. He stated that co-operatives enable farmers to sell their produce at favorable prices, providing them with financial security. According to Cooper, being part of a co-operative allows farmers the unique pleasure of consuming their own products, which is often not possible when selling to wholesalers.
Cooper’s advocacy for farming co-operatives and local produce comes at a time when British farmers face significant challenges due to rising costs and economic pressures. His comments reflect a broader call for structural support to help farmers maintain their livelihoods and continue contributing to the local economy.
The Office for National Statistics recently reported that inflation rates for May stood at 2.8%, with energy cost increases not yet fully impacting supermarket prices. As such, Cooper's remarks highlight a pressing concern for better financial mechanisms to support those in the agricultural sector.
