John Murphy Retires after 16 Years on Tirlán Board of Directors

John G. Murphy, a veteran leader in the dairy industry, has announced his retirement from the board of Tirlán Co-op, Ireland's largest dairy processing cooperative. Murphy's departure marks the end of a 16-year period during which he played a crucial role in steering the cooperative through significant structural and economic changes.

Murphy has been a member of the Tirlán board since 2010, simultaneously holding a director position at Glanbia plc for the same period. He served as the chairperson of Tirlán from October 2020 to May 2026, providing stable leadership during a time of substantial transformation for the cooperative.

Under Murphy's guidance, Tirlán Co-op completed a strategic shift away from its historical corporate structures, culminating in the cooperative's return to full ownership by its farmer-suppliers and independent members. This move was a cornerstone of Murphy's leadership legacy, aligning with the cooperative's goal of retaining financial value for its members.

Gerard O'Brien, the current chairperson of Tirlán Co-op, expressed gratitude for Murphy's contributions, highlighting his role in distributing financial value back to the cooperative's membership, which helped stabilize supplier confidence.

Following Murphy's retirement, Tirlán will initiate formal internal election procedures to fill the board vacancy. A structured selection process will begin to appoint a new director representing the North Wexford and East Wicklow regional constituency. The cooperative is committed to keeping its suppliers and shareholders informed throughout the nomination and voting phases.
