Irish Dairy Initiative Expands Functional Nutrition in Southeast Asia
The European Union is intensifying its dairy export initiatives in Southeast Asia, with Singapore identified as a key hub for this expansion. The campaign, 'European Dairy: Ireland, Where Nature Meets Science,' spearheaded by Bord Bia – The Irish Food Board, involves a €3.2 million investment co-funded by the EU. This initiative aims to build long-term trade partnerships and enhance the nutrition pipeline in Asia by leveraging sustainable farming and scientific research in European dairy production.
Singapore is recognized globally as a center for food innovation, playing a crucial role in product development and distribution across Southeast Asia. The region's growing and aging population, particularly in Singapore, is driving a heightened demand for functional foods designed to support healthy aging and general well-being. Given Singapore's limited domestic dairy production, local manufacturers and food innovators are increasingly reliant on imports.
Ms. Lorna Allen, Bord Bia's South East Market Manager, highlighted Singapore's strategic importance as a gateway for European dairy engagement in the region. She noted that Ireland's dairy product exports to Southeast Asia reached €276 million in 2025, marking a year-on-year increase of 16.4%. The EU-backed campaign is facilitating closer cooperation between European dairy producers and regional nutrition innovators.
Dr. Kalpana Bhaskaran of Temasek Polytechnic emphasized the critical role of dairy ingredients throughout life stages, noting the growing momentum of protein-fortified and functional dairy products. She stressed the substantial opportunity to enhance public health through evidence-based dairy innovations.
Scientific and Natural Advantages
European dairy from Ireland benefits from a grass-fed, pasture-based production system augmented by advanced scientific research. This combination ensures that European dairy meets the high performance and quality standards demanded by Asian manufacturers. Dr. André Brodkorb, a senior researcher at Teagasc Food Research Centre Moorepark, provided evidence that Irish grass-fed milk offers superior nutritional benefits, with higher levels of omega-3 and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) compared to other feeding systems.
Engagement at FHA Singapore 2026
Bord Bia showcased leading European dairy suppliers at the Food & Hospitality Asia (FHA) event in Singapore. The event provided industry professionals with opportunities to establish partnerships and explore the role of European dairy in advancing nutrition solutions across Asia. The focus was on functional dairy ingredients tailored for sports nutrition, healthy aging, and life-stage nutrition, as well as fostering direct connections between suppliers and potential collaborators.
As part of the EU's engagement efforts in Singapore, Bord Bia is also organizing a closed-door industry session to unite stakeholders from research, development, and manufacturing sectors. This initiative underscores the ongoing collaboration between European dairy stakeholders and regional partners, including institutions like Temasek and Teagasc, to drive innovation and knowledge exchange in functional nutrition.
