Irish Cattle Breeding Federation Emphasizes Data-Driven Breeding Strategies
The Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) is urging dairy farmers to focus on data-driven breeding strategies as they prepare for the 2026 breeding season. The organization emphasizes that decisions made in the upcoming months will significantly impact herd performance in the future.
Farmers are encouraged to log into their HerdPlus account to access their Herd EBI Scorecard, which details the genetic strengths and weaknesses within their herd. This information is crucial for identifying areas for improvement, such as fertility, milk solids, maintenance, and health traits.
For cows not being bred for replacements, the ICBF advises using the Dairy Beef Index (DBI) when selecting beef A.I or stock bulls. The DBI focuses on beef performance, carcass traits, calving ease, and gestation length, maximizing the value of dairy-beef calves.
Additionally, the ICBF highlights the importance of factoring in TB breeding values when choosing bulls. Selecting animals with lower TB PTA values can reduce the herd's susceptibility to the disease.
Accurate recording of health and temperament data, such as mastitis, lameness, and temperament scores, is essential for making informed breeding decisions. This information enhances the accuracy of ICBF tools like Cow's Own Worth (C.O.W.) and supports better herd health evaluations.
The ICBF also recommends using their Sire Advice tool to avoid inbreeding, match cows with suitable bulls, and drive genetic progress. Regular fertility reports and pregnancy scans provide valuable insights into calving status and expected dates, which are essential for effective forward planning.
