Irish Agri-Food Sector Sees 39% Increase in Gas Demand Due to Dairy Production

In March 2026, Ireland's agri-food sector experienced a 39% jump in gas demand, primarily due to the increased activity in the dairy industry during the spring season. This information was reported by Gas Networks Ireland, highlighting the significance of the dairy sector in driving energy consumption.

Overall, gas demand in Ireland rose by 1% from the previous month but was 4% lower compared to March 2025. During the first quarter of 2026, total gas demand was 5% higher than the last quarter of 2025 and showed a 1% year-on-year increase.

Gas Networks Ireland attributed the rise in demand to the seasonal increase in food and beverage production, particularly noting the higher volumes of milk processed in spring. Edwina Nyhan, the director of strategy and regulation at Gas Networks Ireland, stated that gas provides a reliable and flexible energy source for processors during these peak periods.

In Q1 2026, gas accounted for 38% of Ireland’s electricity generation, with a peak of 67% during the quarter. Wind energy contributed 40% in March, while solar energy provided a smaller share, indicating a diverse energy mix in the country's electricity generation.

The surge in gas demand underscores the critical role that the dairy industry plays in Ireland's economy, particularly during high production seasons. This trend is expected to continue as the dairy sector maintains its central position in the agri-food industry.
