India Safeguards Dairy Sector in New Trade Deal with the United States
On February 3, 2026, India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that the agriculture and dairy sectors have been safeguarded in a new trade deal with the United States. This announcement followed a press conference where Goyal emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to these crucial sectors.
According to Goyal, the trade agreement offers significant opportunities for various stakeholders, including those in exports and technology sectors. US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins highlighted that the agreement would allow the US to export more farm products to India, addressing a $1.3 billion agricultural trade deficit recorded in 2024. Rollins expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump for facilitating the deal, which is expected to benefit American farmers by expanding market access in India.
Piyush Goyal noted the enthusiasm among those involved in India's exports and technology sectors. He stated that the trade deal would help India acquire advanced technology from the US and align with initiatives like 'Make in India' and 'Design in India'.
The US-India trade agreement is seen as a step towards strengthening ties between the two democracies. The bilateral relationship aims to co-create technologies and develop solutions beneficial for both nations' economic growth. Goyal reiterated that the deal unlocks unprecedented opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs in India.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Modi expressed his delight over the agreement, noting reduced tariffs on Made in India products. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between large economies to unlock mutual benefits and opportunities.
