India's Move Towards Self-Sufficiency in Whey Protein Production
Perfect Day, a global leader in animal-free dairy proteins, is on track to open a precision fermentation facility in Bharuch, Gujarat, in the second half of 2026. This initiative is being developed with Zydus Lifesciences and aims to produce recombinant beta-lactoglobulin, a key whey protein, through innovative fermentation technology that does not require animal use.
This facility is seen as a strategic move for India, which currently imports over 90% of its whey protein from countries such as the United States, Europe, and New Zealand. In the fiscal year 2022–23, India imported more than 45,000 tonnes of whey protein concentrate and isolates, valued at over ₹1,200 crore (approximately $145 million). These imports are primarily used in sectors like sports nutrition, infant formula, medical nutrition, and functional beverages.
The new plant in Gujarat is not a pilot or research site but a fully commercial facility aimed at long-term profitability and operational resilience. Marshall Bredwell, Chief Operating Officer at Perfect Day, highlighted that the demand for animal-free whey already exceeds current supply levels, with several global customers lined up. He emphasized that the focus is on product functionality, reliability, and supply stability, which are key drivers for the demand for precision-fermented proteins.
The precision fermentation process will enable the production of beta-lactoglobulin (BLG), a major component of whey protein known for its solubility, neutral flavor profile, and high bioavailability. This makes it suitable for various applications, including performance nutrition, lactose-free dairy products, meal replacements, and ready-to-drink dairy beverages.
By reducing its dependence on imports, the facility could potentially position India as a self-sufficient producer and even an exporter of high-grade whey protein in the coming decade. This aligns with the global shift towards sustainable, scalable, and high-functionality dairy ingredients.
