India's livestock sector has shown significant growth in the 2024-25 period, as highlighted by the Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025, released by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. The data underscores India's continued dominance in milk production, which reached 247.87 million tonnes, reflecting a 3.58% annual increase. This boost in production has elevated per capita milk availability to 485 grams per day.

Major contributing states to this output include Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, which together account for over half of the national milk supply. Growth across various animal groups was also noted, with crossbred cattle leading at a 4.97% increase, followed by indigenous cattle and buffaloes at 3.51% and 2.45%, respectively.

In the egg production sector, India solidified its status as the world's second-largest producer, with an output of 149.11 billion eggs, marking a 4.44% rise. Per capita availability climbed to 106 eggs per year, driven largely by commercial poultry, which makes up 84.49% of total production. Key states such as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, and Karnataka contributed significantly, representing 64.37% of national egg output.

Meat production also increased by 2.46%, reaching 10.50 million tonnes, with nearly half originating from poultry. West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana were the primary meat-producing states, accounting for 57.55% of the output. Meanwhile, wool production grew by 2.63% to 34.57 million kilograms, with Rajasthan being the leading producer at 47.85% of the national total.

These developments highlight India's ongoing strength in livestock-based nutrition and its critical role in supporting rural economic resilience. The dairy sector, in particular, continues to be a cornerstone of the country's agricultural performance.
