India Needs More Amul-Like Cooperatives to Transform Rural Economy, Says Modi
Amul as a Model for Rural Empowerment
Founded in 1946 with just two village dairy cooperative societies, Amul has grown into a national powerhouse, with over 16 million milk producers delivering to 1.85 lakh dairy cooperative societies across India. The cooperative processes milk through 222 District Co-operative Milk Unions and markets it via 28 State Marketing Federations. Modi described Amul as a symbol of rural transformation, calling for similar large-scale cooperatives to replicate its success.
“India is on the path to prosperity through cooperation,” Modi said, adding that the Ministry of Cooperation, established in 2021, is key to achieving this vision.
Strengthening Rural Economies
Modi outlined several initiatives aimed at boosting rural incomes and modernizing village economies. Over 70,000 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) are being digitized to improve efficiency and ensure better returns for farmers.
The Prime Minister also spoke about revitalizing traditional village occupations, such as blacksmithing, carpentry, and pottery, through the Vishwakarma Yojana. This scheme provides skill enhancement and financial support to artisans, creating new opportunities for rural craftsmen.
Rising Rural Prosperity
Citing a recent survey, Modi highlighted that rural consumption has nearly tripled since 2011, signaling an improvement in living standards. For the first time since independence, rural households spend less than 50% of their income on food, allowing for increased expenditure on other goods and services.
“Ensuring a dignified life for rural India is a top priority,” Modi said, pointing to government programs aimed at providing basic amenities, improving healthcare access, and reducing out-migration.
Healthcare Revolution in Villages
Modi highlighted the expansion of healthcare services through over 1.5 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and the widespread adoption of telemedicine platforms like e-Sanjeevini. These initiatives, supported by digital technologies, have provided rural residents access to top doctors and hospitals, benefiting millions.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s villages demonstrated resilience as vaccines were delivered to the remotest areas, Modi said.
A Vision for Empowered Villages
Modi concluded by reiterating his government’s commitment to rural development, aiming for an empowered and self-reliant rural India. “When intentions are noble, the results are satisfying,” he said, highlighting the progress made over the past decade.
As India looks to the future, the creation of new Amul-like cooperatives could play a pivotal role in transforming the rural economy and improving the lives of millions.
