ICMSA Requests Extension for Nitrates Regulation Compliance
The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) has appealed to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to postpone the start date for compliance with the 14% ration rule under the Nitrates Regulations. The current rule requires farmers to adhere to this regulation starting April 15, but the ICMSA argues that the date should be moved to May 15 due to adverse weather conditions this spring. These conditions have increased the need for higher protein concentrate in cattle diets, according to Eamon Carroll, ICMSA Deputy President.
Mr. Carroll highlighted the difficulties faced by farmers who are struggling with poor weather conditions, impacting both field conditions and milk production costs. He noted that extending the compliance date would prevent farmers from having to justify their actions in future inspections. He also suggested that such an extension would reduce administrative burdens on farmers and advisors.
The ICMSA emphasizes that most farmers will likely need to utilize the flexibilities provided in the legislation. Consequently, the organization advocates for a more practical approach that accommodates the current circumstances, reducing unnecessary bureaucracy.
