I just got back fr om a trade mission to Guatemala, wh ere the diverse landscapes and geography support a growing dairy farming industry throughout the country. Guatemalan organizations like the Asociación de Desarrollo Lácteo de Guatemala (ASODEL) are working to provide local dairy farmers with skills to support domestic growth and sustainability initiatives, creating more resilient dairy value chains.
Guatemala’s domestic dairy production
We heard from ASODEL Director Ramiro Perez, who shared how much room dairy demand has to grow to be comparable with the rest of the Central American region…and how they are looking to reach those goals.

Guatemala’s middle class and urbanization are rising, creating a stronger demand for premium dairy commodities. This presents an opportunity for U.S. dairy to supplement Guatemala’s domestic dairy production with imports of popular items like cheese, whey products, and non-fat dairy milk and skim milk powder. In fact, dairy is among the top global consumer-oriented import values in Guatemala. It was great to see how U.S. dairy is used in Guatemalan cuisine and how readily available everyone’s favorite dairy pastimes are!

We also toured Finca Pasajinak, an impressive dairy farm with 500 jerseys. There I added two new by-products to my list…pineapple husks and banana peels! A cow’s rumen is a real treasure. It can turn so many waste streams into fantastic nutrition!

While we were there, U.S. Dairy Export Council signed an important MOU to continue our growing partnership and advance collaboration.
