Fonterra's Ambitious Electrification Plan
Fonterra is set to invest NZ$150 million in electrification projects across the North Island of New Zealand over an 18-month period. This move is a significant step towards meeting climate goals and enhancing operational resilience.
The dairy cooperative aims to introduce electric boilers at its Whareroa, Edgecumbe, and Waitoa sites, supplemented by fleet decarbonisation, marking a pivotal moment for the company's future operations.
Achieving Coal-Free Manufacturing
As part of their broader strategy, Fonterra decommissioned the last coal boiler in the North Island in 2024. The upcoming investments signify the cooperative's commitment to sustainable growth, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and increasing gas alternatives.
“Choosing the right energy solutions means balancing affordability, energy supply security, and reducing our environmental footprint. The new electric boilers are integral to this endeavor,” stated Anna Palairet, Fonterra’s Chief Operating Officer.
Details of the Investments
Whareroa:With a $64 million investment in two electrode boilers, the site expects to trim annual emissions by 51,000 tonnes, aiding Fonterra’s 2030 emissions reduction target by 3%.
Edgecumbe:A $57 million electrode boiler installation will pivot the site from co-generation to renewable energy, aiming to cut emissions by 28,000 tonnes and decrease natural gas dependence by around 8%.
Waitoa:After the removal of its last coal boiler, the site receives a $18 million investment for two resistive element boilers to support future UHT processing growth.
Fleet Decarbonisation:Fonterra anticipates a 60% annual emission reduction from piloting six new EV tankers.
