Fonterra's Hapori Programme: Nurturing Rural Wellbeing Through Community Support
Shaheen Junge, Fonterra’s Community Engagement and Social Investment Manager, emphasizes the program's role in building relationships within communities. The Co-operative's involvement with the Rural Support Trust (RST) and well-being initiatives reflects a commitment to embedding itself in the community for shared causes.

Since the partnership with RST began in 2022, Fonterra continues to collaborate to address mental health issues and provide resilience tools for rural communities. The Hapori Programme, meaning community and kinship, allocated around $900k for initiatives across New Zealand in 2023, benefiting regions such as Northland, Auckland, Taranaki, and more.

Launched in 2019, the Hapori Programme supports diverse projects, from educational groups to environmental initiatives, demonstrating Fonterra's belief in the collective effort required for community thriving. The regional teams, based at manufacturing sites and Farm Source stores, play a crucial role in offering support tailored to each community's needs.

In 2023, Fonterra extended aid to communities affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, exemplified by the Waikato Hapori team assisting in cleanup efforts. The Co-operative's partnership with Trees for Survival involves volunteering and support for environmental education programs, benefiting 22 schools.

Fonterra's commitment to mental well-being extends to its sponsorship of Surfing for Farmers, offering farmers an opportunity to connect, engage in conversations around mental health, and enjoy surfing sessions followed by communal gatherings. Shaheen encourages more farmers to participate, emphasizing the availability of funding through the Hapori Programme for local initiatives.

In summary, Fonterra's Hapori Programme is not just a financial contribution but a hands-on approach to building stronger, more resilient rural communities.
