Fonterra farmers are set to benefit from new funding incentives, with support from major global partners like Mars and Nestlé, aimed at sustainability and efficiency improvements on farms.

Fonterra's latest initiative introduces a comprehensive package of on-farm funding incentives as part of agreements with Mars and Nestlé. Starting next month, Fonterra farmers can apply for reimbursements of up to $1,500 for specific on-farm solutions if they achieve the "Co-operative Difference" by the 2025/26 period.
The expectation is that over 85% of farmers will qualify based on 2023/24 data. Funding will support solutions focusing on animal performance, pasture, and data optimization, as well as on-farm planting for enhancing carbon sequestration. Herd improvement companies LIC and CRV will provide tools for animal performance, while subscriptions for Pasture.io and Aimer are aimed at pasture optimization. Data solutions will involve Farm IQ and Trev.

"When we announced the new incentives in February, we asked farmers what on-farm solutions the customer funding should cover," said Anne Douglas, Group Director for Farm Source.
She noted that the selected solutions are efficient, accessible, and enhance emissions reduction. Mars and Nestlé have been longstanding supporters of Fonterra's sustainability efforts. Mars, through pilot programs and sustainability shops, and Nestlé offering additional payments for sustainable practices, have both contributed significantly. The new initiative replaces previous contributions with an emissions-focused incentive.
