Fonterra and Growing Future Farmers Launch Dairy Youth Programme

Fonterra, in partnership with Growing Future Farmers (GFF), has announced a new initiative to support young people entering the dairy industry. The programme, co-designed by Fonterra, will begin with a pilot stage in the regions of Waikato and the Bay of Plenty, starting in early 2026. Students participating in this two-year programme will gain practical on-farm experience provided by Fonterra Farmer Trainers and will have the opportunity to achieve an NZQA qualification.

Anne Douglas, the group director of Farm Source at Fonterra, highlighted the importance of this initiative as part of sector-wide efforts to support young entrants to the dairy industry. She stated, "We’re excited to partner with Growing Future Farmers to introduce a new generation to the diverse opportunities that exist within the Co-op and dairy industry."

The programme is designed to evolve over time to ensure it continues to provide long-term benefits for students, the cooperative, and the dairy industry as a whole. Wendy Paul, CEO of Growing Future Farmers and a former Fonterra employee, emphasized the significance of this partnership, noting the importance of succession planning and resource allocation for future farming generations.

The Growing Future Farmers model integrates practical experience with academic learning and pastoral support, aiming to set young people up for success in the primary sector. Jo Johnstone, a Fonterra farmer and Growing Future Farmers trustee, shared her positive experiences as a Farmer Trainer and expressed the value of investing in the next generation of dairy industry leaders.

This programme represents a strategic move to nurture future farm owners, managers, and industry leaders who will contribute to the sustainability and strength of the cooperative and the broader rural community.
