Fonterra and Growing Future Farmers Launch Dairy Training Programme

A new initiative by Fonterra and Growing Future Farmers seeks to encourage young people to pursue careers in dairy farming in New Zealand's Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. The two-year pilot programme pairs students aged 16 to 18 with experienced Fonterra farmer trainers. Participants engage in four days of practical on-farm experience and one day of academic study each week, aiming for an NZQA-accredited qualification.

The first group of students comes from diverse locations such as Auckland, Waihi, Palmerston North, Morrinsville, and Mount Maunganui. Many do not have farming backgrounds but are eager to start careers in the dairy industry. Students have already completed orientation, which included activities like a tanker demonstration, milk quality training, and vehicle training. They also visited a Farm Source store to gather necessary equipment.

Anne Douglas, Group Director of Farm Source, emphasized the critical role of farmers in nurturing the next generation, stating that the programme is both farmer-led and designed to meet the real needs of dairy farms. Farmer trainers play a vital role in mentoring students, equipping them with essential technical skills and confidence.

The initiative builds on the success of Growing Future Farmers in other agricultural sectors such as sheep, beef, and deer. Wendy Paul, CEO of Growing Future Farmers, highlighted the importance of creating pathways for young people in the industry, supported by great training and mentorship.

Currently, seven farmer trainers are involved in hosting and mentoring the students, ensuring they gain practical skills and a strong support network. The programme is designed to evolve over time, aiming to support succession and workforce development for the long-term sustainability of the dairy sector.
